Top executives of the Chinese AI company Moonshot AI, maker of the Kimi models, are in talks to settle a legal dispute with a shareholder before its planned Hong Kong listing, according to a Reuters exclusive that cites people familiar with the matter [1]. Reuters dates the story 12 October 2026. The syndicated copy carries 11 October in its web address and a time of 23:02 UTC on 11 October, which is 00:02 in London on 12 October [1].
REPORTED: this comes from unnamed sources. Moonshot has not confirmed it. The accusations below are untested allegations in an arbitration, taken from a letter seen by Reuters. TSN has not seen the letter.
What is reported
The shareholder is Recurrent.ai, an AI software developer. Reuters says Recurrent and some of its investors have accused Moonshot CEO Yang Zhilin and Chief Technology Officer Zhang Yutao of setting up Moonshot without the Recurrent board’s authorisation, making false representations to investors and enriching themselves at Recurrent’s expense. Reuters says that is according to a letter dated 11 March from Recurrent’s lawyers to Moonshot’s investors, which it saw [1]. Reuters says it “could not independently determine the accuracy of the letter’s claims” [1].
The dispute is in arbitration in Hong Kong and “has been going on since 2024”, Reuters says. The people it spoke to “did not know whether a settlement was imminent” [1].
The figures
Reuters says Recurrent received 9.5% of Moonshot’s original shares when the startup was established. It says Recurrent and its investors are seeking compensation equal to 10.5% of the original shares, which “could be worth more than $700 million based on Moonshot’s $30 billion valuation in a June fundraising, one person said” [1]. That is one unnamed person’s estimate, not a payout or an award.
Reuters says one of the people told it the dispute is not expected to jeopardise the IPO plans. It also says Moonshot confidentially filed for a Hong Kong IPO, as Reuters reported in September [1][3].
The other side
The arbitration dates from 2024. In December 2024 the South China Morning Post reported that Yang said, in a statement to the paper, that Recurrent AI’s board, including members representing certain investors, “had already signed off” on his exit and his pursuit of other ventures [2]. Reuters says Yang “has previously denied the allegations”. It also says a lawyer at MinterEllison, which it says represents Yang, Zhang Yutao and Moonshot, told Chinese media in November 2024 that the case “lacked both legal and factual basis” [1].
What the parties have said
Reuters says Yang and Zhang Yutao did not respond to emailed requests for comment, Moonshot declined to comment, and Recurrent did not respond [1]. TSN found no statement on the Moonshot and Kimi websites or on Moonshot’s X account, @Kimi_Moonshot, on 12 October [4].
