Tesla has put a new date on the promise its Full Self-Driving customers have waited longest for. On the company’s third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday evening, AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said unsupervised FSD in customer-owned cars is targeted for the second quarter of 2027, Electrek reports. In the same answer, a senior engineer said Tesla is trying to get Cybercabs to customers before the end of this year.

The question came from retail shareholders. “When can we anticipate FSD unsupervised in customer cars?” was one of the most popular questions submitted for the call, backed by about 1.1 million shares, according to Electrek. Elluswamy’s answer, in the words of a second Electrek report, was “middle of next year”.
The first step runs through Tesla’s own fleet
The target comes with a significant limit. According to Electrek’s account, Elluswamy described the first stage as owners adding their own vehicles to Tesla’s managed Robotaxi fleet, with Tesla running the operation. On that description, an owner’s car would drive itself without supervision only where Tesla’s Robotaxi service already operates. Electrek also reports that Elluswamy again named safety as the bottleneck.
Those zones are limited. Electrek says the Robotaxi service runs in six US metros, mostly covering small parts of each city, and that cars in the Bay Area still carry safety drivers under California rules. Its Miami zone, mapped earlier, covered mostly West Miami and a strip towards Doral and Sweetwater, while Orlando and Tampa launched in July with similarly small geofences, according to the site. Inside them, Electrek says, the service keeps to low-speed routes and largely stays off highways. Tesla’s own third-quarter update says the service had covered nearly two million cumulative unsupervised miles by the end of September.
The written update, which TSN covered on Wednesday, contains no date for unsupervised driving in customer cars. The Q2 2027 target comes only from the call.
Cybercabs for customers, mostly for Tesla
The Cybercab answer came from Lars Moravy, Tesla’s vice president of engineering. “In short we’re trying to get Cybercabs to customers by the end of this year in 2026,” he said, as quoted by Electrek. “Obviously we’re producing a lot in Texas but all of those are going to our own internal Robotaxi fleet, and as Tesla grows we’ll mainly deliver fully designed autonomous vehicles to our customers and Cybercab will be the first.”
He described a slow start. “As we start small this year and we learn about all the things Ashok mentioned about delivery and ownership and fleet management and autonomous vehicles in customer hands, we’ll continue to scale that,” Moravy said, according to Electrek’s transcription. Elon Musk then added that Cybercabs would mostly be Tesla-owned vehicles run as a transport service, Electrek reports.
Tesla’s update lists installed annual capacity of more than 125,000 Cybercabs in Texas, marked as in production, and says Robotaxi rides using Cybercabs began in Austin on 3 September. On Moravy’s account, every Cybercab built so far is going into Tesla’s own fleet. Tesla gave no price or terms for selling Cybercabs to customers, and neither Electrek report describes how customers would use one before unsupervised FSD reaches their own cars.
A deadline with history
Both dates are targets, not products, and Tesla’s self-driving timelines have slipped before. In July 2025, Musk told investors unsupervised FSD would be available “for unsupervised personal use by the end of this year in certain geographies”, as quoted by Electrek. Electrek also notes that owners of cars with Tesla’s older HW3 computer have been told it cannot run unsupervised FSD, with no clear upgrade plan. The new date is narrower as well as later: a car that drives itself, at first, only inside the boundaries Tesla already serves.
