Type One Energy, a Tennessee fusion company, said on 6 October 2026 that it has completed a $200 million Series B funding round. The money is confirmed. Almost everything about what it will buy, and when, is the company’s own plan, and one date has already moved. TSN offers no investment advice.
What was announced
Confirmed (company release). Type One says the round was “co-led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Clutterbuck Capital, with participation from Lowercarbon Capital, Siemens Energy Ventures, SiteGround Capital and other new investors” [1]. Reuters reports that the round takes total funding to more than $400 million and that the company did not disclose its valuation [2]. TechCrunch adds that Type One had earlier raised $82.5 million in an extended Series A [3].
What the money is for
The release says the money supports its “FusionDirect” technology development programme and “continued execution of Project Infinity” [1]. The CEO, Christofer Mowry, told Reuters the money would help develop the technology, including an engineering prototype called Infinity One [2]. ENR reports the company did not say how it splits between engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction [4].
The fusion claims, labelled
A stellarator is a type of fusion machine that uses a twisted pattern of magnetic fields to hold superheated gas, called plasma, in place [2]. Type One’s plans are company claims:
- Infinity One is a prototype at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) retired Bull Run coal site. ENR reports it will not generate electricity for sale; its job is to check a design [4]. Type One lists commissioning in 2029 [4].
- Infinity Two is the planned commercial plant at the same site, described as 400 MWe, meaning 400 megawatts of electrical output, up from 350 MW in an earlier description [4]. The CEO’s conditional target, given to TechCrunch, is to bring it online by 2034 [3]. A final TVA decision to proceed depends on development work and approvals [4].
- The company calls it the “world’s first commercial fusion power plant” [1]. That describes a plant not yet built, and TSN has not verified the “first” claim.
- Type One says its remaining challenges are “engineering and industrial, rather than resolving questions of plasma physics” [1]. That is a company belief, not a settled finding.
The money may cover only part of the bill. Mowry told TechCrunch the round should get the company about halfway to groundbreaking on the 400 MW plant; TechCrunch changed this wording on 7 October [3]. ENR words it as roughly halfway towards financing the plant [4].
The date that moved
On 31 August Tennessee’s environment department announced it had issued Type One the state’s first fusion-specific licence, in preparation for the project, and said the company intended to break ground “this year” [5]. On 7 October Alison Mickey, Type One’s vice president of external communications, told ENR: “We are planning on breaking ground in the first half of 2027” [4]. She said the company may start the plant’s conventional island in 2028 and its fusion island in 2030, after the prototype operates successfully [4].
What this does not prove
- That fusion power is close. Funding and a state licence are steps, not results. Output and dates are plans.
- That the 2034 target will be met. It is the CEO’s conditional target, and the 2026 groundbreaking date has already slipped [3][4].
- That Siemens is a manufacturing partner. Reuters says Type One aims to work towards a partnership with Siemens; none has been announced [2].
- A valuation. None was disclosed.
The Bottom Line
Type One has confirmed a $200 million Series B, co-led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Clutterbuck Capital. Investors, including the venture arm of Siemens Energy, have backed it. The prototype, the 400 MWe plant and the 2034 date are plans, and groundbreaking has moved from this year to the first half of 2027.
