Siemens Leads a “9-Digit” Investment in Skeleton Technologies, Valuing the Supercapacitor Maker at More Than $1 Billion

Siemens has made a strategic investment in Skeleton Technologies, a maker of supercapacitor-based power systems for AI data centres. Skeleton says the deal values it at more than $1 billion. The deal has not yet closed: Siemens says it will be completed once “customary completion formalities” are met.

Neither company gave the exact amount. Skeleton’s chief executive, Taavi Madiberk, described it as “this 9-digit investment round led by Siemens”, meaning a nine-figure sum.

Siemens also gets exclusive rights to sell Skeleton’s products in the data-centre market worldwide. Siemens said the partnership expands its offering “from the grid connection to the AI rack”.

What Skeleton makes

Supercapacitors store and release electricity very quickly, far faster than ordinary batteries. That matters for AI data centres, where thousands of chips can switch power use up or down within milliseconds, causing large, rapid swings in demand.

Siemens described Skeleton’s supercapacitors as a kind of “electrical shock absorber” that absorbs these swings, protecting equipment and the grid and helping operators fit more computing into existing facilities.

Skeleton claims its systems deliver “up to 40% energy savings and double-digit improvements in GPU performance”. Those are the company’s own figures, and it did not publish how they were measured.

“In AI infrastructure, supercapacitors are becoming the new semiconductors,” Madiberk said.

Why it matters for power

Skeleton’s release cites the International Energy Agency (IEA), which expects global data-centre electricity use to nearly double from about 485 terawatt-hours in 2025 to 950 TWh by 2030, and electricity use by AI-focused data centres to triple.

“The race to scale AI is increasingly becoming a race for power,” said Peter Koerte, a member of Siemens’ managing board.

Skeleton says it plans to invest more than $200 million in scaling up operations and research in Silicon Valley, and to set up US cell manufacturing. Siemens has worked with Skeleton as a technology partner since 2022 and has been an investor since 2023, it said.

What this means

  • Power swings are a new AI bottleneck. Fast-response storage aims to smooth them at the rack.
  • Siemens gets exclusive data-centre sales. It will sell Skeleton’s products alongside its own power equipment.
  • The details are thin. No exact round size, and the performance figures are Skeleton’s claims.
