Teledyne FLIR Launches Ranger R10-3DX Compact Counter-Drone Radar at AUSA 2026

Teledyne FLIR Defense announced the radar on 13 October 2026. The detection ranges and other performance figures are the company’s claims and have not been independently tested.

Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies, has launched the Ranger R10-3DX, a compact radar built to detect and track drones [1]. It was unveiled at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition 2026 in Washington, D.C., and the company says it will be available in the first quarter of 2027 [1].

What does it do?

A counter-drone radar is the “eyes” of a drone-defence system. It sends out radio waves and listens for echoes to spot small aircraft early, so that operators can decide what to do. Other kit, such as cameras or jammers, then handles the response. Teledyne says the R10-3DX is designed to work alongside electro-optical/infrared cameras and “mitigation systems” (equipment that stops drones) [1].

The company says it is aimed at force protection, airport security, border security, coastal surveillance and guarding critical infrastructure [1].

What Teledyne claims

  • Detection ranges: micro-drones at more than 3 km, people on foot beyond 6 km, and light vehicles at more than 12 km [1].
  • Coverage: one radar panel covers 90 degrees side to side and up to 60 degrees upward. Four panels together give a full 360-degree view [1].
  • AI classification: software that helps tell apart drones, aircraft, birds, pedestrians and vehicles [1].
  • Multiple targets: it can track many targets at once, which Teledyne says helps against drone swarms [1].
  • Tough build: qualified to the U.S. military standards MIL-STD-810H (harsh environments) and MIL-STD-461G (electromagnetic interference) [1].
  • Mounting: fixed sites or mobile platforms [1].

It uses digital beam-forming, a technique that steers the radar beam electronically instead of spinning a dish [1].

What the company said

“Small unmanned aircraft continue to present growing security challenges across military installations, airports, and other key infrastructure sites worldwide,” said Rob Tarantino, Senior Vice President of Surveillance at Teledyne FLIR Defense. “The Ranger R10-3DX gives operators an affordable, compact, and highly capable radar solution that delivers the early warning and tracking performance needed to counter evolving drone threats” [1].

What this means

  • Small drones are hard to see. Radars like this aim to give warning early enough to respond.
  • It’s not on sale yet. Availability is Q1 2027, and no price or customers have been announced.
  • Claims need testing. The ranges are Teledyne’s figures; real-world results depend on weather, terrain and drone size.
